Barbara Christensen was an exceptional person. She put herself unselfishly into being a devoted mother, wife, sister, friend to many, and untiring orthodontic assistant for over thirty years. She was a devoted mother to Amy and Scott. She and her husband Mike shared a marriage for 34 years. She had a sister, Christy Youngdahl, a teacher in the Cherry Creek School District, and a brother, John Youngdahl, an insurance agent in Colorado Springs.
Barbara loved to cook and had a library of over 500 cookbooks that she collected over the years. She would often read these much the same way she would read a novel. She also enjoyed reading fictional history based upon historical events. She loved the outdoors including her regular neighborhood walks, hiking in the mountains and boating, in what we called “Barb’s Boat.” Entertaining friends, and setting elaborate tables for all holidays and special gatherings of family and friends gave her great pride. As a breast cancer survivor, Barbara was an avid participant in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure each October. Her husband Mike, son Scott, daughter Amy Fowles, and son-in-law Mike Fowles, established the Barbara Christensen Foundation for Ovarian Cancer Research in her name. It is the hope and dream of her family that this, along with the annual golf tournament at Red Rocks Country Club, will serve as Barb’s legacy.
Ovarian Cancer affects all of us – our wives, our daughters, our sisters and our mothers. Each year in the United States, more than 21,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 15,000 women die of the disease, according to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.
Mortality rates for ovarian cancer have not improved in thirty years since the “War on Cancer” was declared. Other cancers have shown a marked reduction in mortality, due to the availability of early detection tests and improved treatments. Unfortunately, this is not the case with ovarian cancer, which is still the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers.
Your contribution will help advance research of early detection tests, treatment, and ultimately a cure for this deadly disease. Together, we can drive out ovarian cancer.
